Royal Caribbean’s leaders say they view liquified natural gas as a “transitional fuel,” and that they hope to continue to reduce the environmental impact of their ships moving forward. Both ships have been designed around a central interior promenade with entertainment, shops and bars. Carnival Celebration will mostly sail to Eastern Caribbean destinations such as St. Thomas, San Juan and Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic. MSC Seascape debuted in December 2022 easily making our list of the biggest cruise ships in the world. This impressive ship has 20 decks with 2,270 staterooms in 12 different categories. The ship has its own unique experience called Robotron, the first robotic arm thrill ride on the sea. Seascape currently sails from Miami, and in 2025 will offer MSC cruises from Galveston for the first time. Here's a quick rundown of the world's biggest cruise ships by gross registered tons and maximum passenger capacity. Unsurprisingly, Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and Oasis Class dominate the top five in both categories.
What is the biggest Carnival ship?
You can see some large aircraft to the left of the picture — planes capable of carrying hundreds of passengers. Compared to the largest cruise ship in the world, however, they look tiny. In 2024, Royal Caribbean will begin sailing the first of its new Icon-class cruise ships. For more than a century, cruise lines have competed to claim the title of world's largest cruise ship. Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas is the flagship of the Quantum class cruising Asia and the South Pacific half the year, before spending summer in Alaska. It made its maiden voyage in 2014 and holds 16 total decks (14 guest decks) and 2,094 staterooms.
Carnival Firenze (formerly Costa Firenze)
This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world. When it debuted, Oasis of the Seas® won Best Cruise Ship — and now the Amplified game changer will set a new standard for making memories.

When Carnival Jubilee arrived in Galveston late in 2023, it became the largest and newest ship Carnival has ever cruised from that port. Attractions include the Bolt rollercoaster and a whopping 22 dining options, many of which are included in the cruise fare. Launched in 2023, MSC Euribia is among the list of LNG-powered ships that are revolutionizing the industry with cleaner operations as it cruises to mostly European ports of call. Costa Toscana is Costa Smeralda's sister ship, meaning the two ships are identical in size. See how your favorite cruise lines and ships measure up this year with our list below.

Built with bi-level shortcuts, a two-story Royal Promenade with no dead ends, and smart elevators that use machine learning to whisk guests up and down 18 public decks, the new flagship abounds in intuitive innovation. Dividing the ship into eight “neighborhoods” aids guest flow, not unlike the role “lands” play at Disney theme parks. Today, it’s the third-largest cruise ship on the planet, but it’s no slouch. It holds seven different neighborhoods, nearly 3,000 staterooms, three waterslides, and Ultimate Abyss — a 10-story dry slide. Currently, the largest cruise ship in the world by both tonnage and passenger capacity is Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas.
Oasis of the Seas
At the time of publication, it's Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. At 250,800 gross registered tons and carrying up to 7,600 passengers (plus 2,350 crew members), it's a true behemoth. It boasts eight neighborhoods that feature everything from water slides, an indoor AquaTheater, a carousel and an adults-only sun deck to lavish suites, retail shops, thousands of live plants and more than two dozen bars and restaurants.
Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas
All told, a reported 6,685 passengers can enjoy the ship at one time. The vessel is different from other large ships in the cruise industry and boasts features like the Zipline and the AquaTheater. AIDA Cruises AIDAcosma, the second in the Excellence-class, was first released in December 2021. It has 20 decks and 2,626 passenger cabins, which includes suites. The second Icon-class ship, Star of the Seas, is set to sail in 2025.

This ever-changing list includes the Oasis-class and new LNG ships. Keep in mind that this list of biggest cruise ships in the world changes annually, as cruise lines update their fleets. While Royal Caribbean continues to dominate the top (and the bottom) of the list, new entries may surprise you.
World Europa is the first of four total ships in MSC's World-class fleet, with the second ship World America set to launch in 2025. Most people that have visited Las Vegas have stopped and watched the nightly shows at the Bellagio fountains. And while the fountains seem to go on forever when you’re walking past, the largest cruise ships in the world goes on for even longer. Arvia is the second Excel class cruise ship for British-based P&O Cruises.
Older hardware boasts interiors designed by Joe Farcus, a renowned architect known for his kitschy, fun style that employs bright colors, whimsical art installations and neon lights. (He's also responsible for the line's iconic "whale tail" funnels.) Newer vessels tend to have a more toned-down look. After Carnival Jubilee, the line has no ships on order for the first time in years.
At 235,600 gross tons, there’s room for 7,084 passengers and an amazing amount to see and do onboard. This includes Central Park, the mid-ship outdoor promenade that winds through lush gardens, and the AquaTheater, where performers put on aquatic shows, including towering high dives at sea. Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas is the first ship in the Quantum Ultra-class, which is a subset of Royal's Quantum-class. Spectrum of the Seas has 16 total decks (14 guest decks) and 2,137 staterooms. MSC Grandiosa is a part of the Meraviglia Plus-class, which currently has five sailing ships. Onboard, there are 18 decks (15 of which are passenger-accessible) and 2,405 staterooms onboard.
